About Brand
Bates started because decent work boots shouldn’t force you to hand over a whole week’s pay, and dress shoes shouldn’t completely fall apart after a mere six months of Sunday church services. We’re an actual family operation running straight out of central Ohio—third generation now—and honestly, we still stubbornly believe the absolute best way to test a boot is to throw them on and go wear them. Out to freezing job sites. Through miserable, wet winters. Dragged through the mud until something breaks. Or nothing does.
We deliberately sit right in that sweet spot between the cheap, garbage stuff that’ll have you limping by lunchtime and the pretentious luxury brands charging an arm and a leg just for a name stitched inside the heel.
Our customers are regular people who need their footwear to work just as hard as they do. Whether that means standing for twelve grueling hours on solid concrete or chasing wild kids through a crowded grocery store. We don’t do flashy, fashion-forward stuff. Not our scene. We do forward-moving, all-day-wearing, forgot-I-even-had-them-on comfortable.
Every single pair gets the exact same question before it gets boxed up and ships: would we put our own feet in these? If the answer is no, then neither should you. That’s been the unwavering rule since my grandfather opened our very first shop back in 1961, and we haven’t found a single good reason to change it.
